STEM learning isn’t just about exploration and problem-solving it’s also a powerful way to nurture children’s self-regulation: the ability to manage stress, emotions, attention, and behaviour to achieve goals and engage positively with others.

This connection is strongest when STEM learning is guided intentionally through the frameworks of Habits of Mind and Growth Mindset, which supports children to persist, adapt, and approach scientific inquiry with curiosity and resilience.

In this special STEM Hour, we are joined by Charina Pumpa, Specialist STEM Teacher at Redeemer Lutheran School (SA), for an engaging 60-minute interview exploring:

  • Real-world examples from Charina’s classroom focused on children aged 3–8 years.
  • How to lay the groundwork for a Growth Mindset and Habits of Mind from infancy.
  • Strategies to identify and support children’s mindsets in STEM learning.
  • Practical ways to nurture self-regulation and persistence through STEM.
  • Language and prompts that can reinforce positive learning behaviours.
  • How to design STEM experiences that help children think critically, engage confidently, and approach challenges with resilience.

If you’re not familiar, Habits of Mind explores 16 intelligent behaviours — such as observing, questioning, and thinking flexibly — that encourage children to thoughtfully respond to challenges. Growth Mindset is the belief that children’s abilities can be developed through effort and persistence, rather than being fixed traits.

Purchasing a ticket allows you to tune in live or via a recording. While we strongly encourage attending live, a recording will be shared via email following the event and can be viewed for 3 days.

STEM Hour: Supporting Transitions through Place-Based STEM Learning

When children move between home, early learning, and school, they often face new people and expectations. Children’s confidence in these transitions will depend on whether they feel a strong sense of connection between and belonging in each space — and STEM is a powerful tool to support this.

2

STEM Hour: Integrating Arts into STEM for Meaningful Exploration

In early childhood, STEM learning builds on children’s prior knowledge, encourages collaboration, and nurtures creative thinking — making it a natural partner to the Arts.

3

STEM Chemical Reactions Workshop

This workshop explores the fascinating relationship between chemical reactions and language development in early childhood. Come along to learn how to recognise chemistry in children’s everyday lives, find opportunities for age-appropriate chemical exploration, and explore the pedagogy behind language development through STEM inquiry.
